We are in Navarra, being part of one of the less traveled routes of the Way of Santiago: the call French Road by Aragon. Although, personally, we prefer to call it French Road from Aragon.
It is well known that many less pilgrims pass through this ramal than the one from Roncesvalles. But what is perhaps not so obvious is the extent to which it is about a path ignored.
I invite you, reader, to do a simple test: look for information about this branch in the media, on the Internet, on social networks, in travel agencies or even in associations of the Way. You'll see how difficult it is to find clear and complete references.
We were aware of this reality before coming to Navarra to open our Albergue on this route. In fact, it was a totally intentional decision.
We choose this way, first of all, to offer an alternative to the saturation of other routes, betting on a more authentic experience, closer to what it really means to pilgrim. And second, with the illusion of contribute to give life and visibility to this very special stretch of the Way.
What we didn't expect was to feel, at many times, that this path is also forgotten by those who should drive it.
This branch crosses two autonomous communities: Aragon and Navarra. And although it cannot be generalized, we do see how, sometimes, very detailed descriptions of sections even before the Pyrenees are presented, while the journey that continues in Navarra just appears mentioned. This lack of continuity creates confusion: for those who do not know the Way, it seems that it ends in Undués de Lerda, when it actually continues to offer history, landscape and pilgrimage experience.
Similarly, from Navarra we also perceive that this path receives clearly less attention the one from Roncesvalles, much more consolidated and promoted.
It's not about facing paths, it's about balancing looks.
This branch exists. It has history, beauty and a huge potential. And it deserves to be known, cared for and shared.
We continue here, doing our work every day: welcoming pilgrims and betting on this path, despite everything.
If you believe in a more authentic Way of Santiago, quieter and more human, we invite you to find out... and to help others do so too.
