Monastery of San Juan de Ortega - (Burgos)
Historical-artistic review
The Monastery of San Juan de Ortega, founded in the 12th century by San Juan itself, is among the most emblematic enclaves of the Camino de Santiago in the province of Burgos. Originally conceived as a priory and hospital of pilgrims, its church and cloister reflect the transition of Romanesque art to more purified and functional forms. The temple stands out for its luminously articulated ship, In the center of the church is a baldaquino, under which is the crypt that since 1966 contains the sarcophagus with the remains of San Juan de Ortega. The set combines devotion, technique and hospitality in an architecture deeply connected with the experience of the medieval pilgrim.
The model
The model has been made with special attention to the elements that characterize the whole of San Juan de Ortega: the elongated ship and the relationship between the volume of the church and the adjacent cloister. The miniature representation conveys the sense of serenity, proportion and welcome that this real place offers, inviting to appreciate the constructive logic of the whole.
